The mission of the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University is to transform human healthcare and the environment by emulating the way nature builds. Developed as an alliance between Harvard and other premier academic and clinical partner institutions, Institute faculty and staff collaborate in high-risk, fundamental research and science-driven technology development. A major focus of the Institute is to translate the technologies developed by its faculty and staff into commercial products and therapies through collaborations with clinical investigators and establishment of corporate alliances. For more information, visit: http://wyss.harvard.edu/>http://wyss.harvard.edu/.

The Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University seeks a talented and creative individual to contribute to the design and construction of structured, functional textiles for wearable robotic applications. Reporting to the Director of Operations and working closely with the Platform Faculty, Staff, and Researchers, the Apparel Designer will take functional and technical requirements from an engineering and biomechanics team and interpret these into a broad range of prototyped garments. More specifically, the successful candidate will:

  • Develop an understanding of the functional requirements of various wearable robot embodiments through discussions with engineers, scientists, biomechanists, and clinicians.
  • Provide design input, textile selection, pattern making, and iterative soft goods fabrication for wearable technical garments including components such as performance textiles, embedded sensors, actuators, batteries, and integrated wiring.
  • Create technical drawings / sketches and representations of garment designs such that construction information and strategic concepts are developed early with team member and feedback collected prior to construction.
  • Possess an in-depth knowledge of both technical and non-technical textiles, stretchable fabrics, construction, prototyping, and sewing techniques to produce durable garments capable of withstanding heavy use.
  • Optimize previously generated garment designs with ongoing modifications for performance, form, function, comfort, fit, style, sizing, and testing requirements.
  • Test constructed garments for functionality and usability with target audiences, collect and document feedback, and identify necessary metrics to measure and optimize various system parameters against functional requirements.
  • Interface with outside vendors to leverage more advanced materials and construction approaches.
  • Create and manage a library of all materials and fabrication techniques appropriate for wearable robotics as well as explore new materials to achieve the specific functional requirements of the applications.

Basic Qualifications
BA/BS Degree in apparel design, textiles, garment engineering or similar. Minimum of 2 years of experience with technically sophisticated apparel projects.
Additional Qualifications
Demonstrated the ability to collaborate effectively across a wide variety of disciplines including technical engineering staff. Ability to fabricate designs within tight timelines to create both presentation appropriate models and functionally appropriate models for rigorous testing. Ability to handle all different aspects of apparel fabrication including a broad understanding of the most appropriate construction methods for high performance applications. Experience with fabricating orthoses, wearable medical devices, wearable technology, and/or analyzing human walking is a big plus. Company Profile
Harvard is known for global leadership in education, and the Harvard faculty is composed of men and women who are world-class scholars. Faculty members are passionate and curious individuals who continue their own research while teaching at Harvard. They come from across the country and all over the world, bringing with them a diverse wealth of knowledge. Almost all Harvard College courses are designed, taught and overseen by Harvard faculty, and virtually all FAS faculty are required to teach as part of their duties. The faculty is highly accessible, and Harvard College class sizes are on average below 40, with over half the courses being offered each semester enrolling 10 or fewer students. This allows for a closer student-professor relationship and contributes to the sense of community on campus. Professors also make themselves available to students outside of the classroom, even beyond office hours, such as meeting in the dining hall or before or after class. The faculty at Harvard make a point of connecting with their students to create a fulfilling academic experience.
